Sathyaraj is the stage name of Rangaraj Subbaiah who is a film actor primarily appearing in Tamil films. He played villainous roles in the starting of his acting career and later on played lead roles.

He attended Government Arts College, Coimbatore for a B.Sc degree in Botany. Sathyaraj got married to Maheswari Subbaiah in 1979. His son Sibiraj is also a Tamil film actor. Sathyaraj is also a media personality who is known expressing his views about issues such as water rights in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lankan Tamil nationalism.
Debut:
Sathyaraj made his acting debut in 1978 with T.N.Baalu's directed Tamil film 'Sattam En Kaiyil'. He played the role of a subordinate of the main villain played by Thengai Srinivasan.

Sathyaraj has appeared in over two hundred films which include Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi films.
He played the lead romantic role in the film 'Kadalora Kavithaiga' (1986). He played three different roles in his directed Tamil action film ‘Villadhi Villain’ (1995). He is the producer of films Lee (2007) and Naaigal Jaakirathai (2014). Sathyaraj appeared as Durgeshwara Azhagusundaram in the Bollywood hit movie 'Chennai Express' (2013).
Sathyaraj has played the role of Kattapa who killed Baahubali (Prabhas) in the film 'Baahubali: The Beginning'. He has also portrayed the character of Kattapa in the upcoming movie 'Baahubali: The Conclusion' that is scheduled for release on 28 April 2017.

Ø Vijay Award for Best Actor in 2007 for the film 'Onbadhu Roobai Nottu'.
Ø Vijay Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2012 for the movie 'Nanban'.
Ø Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award (Tamil) in 2013 for the film 'Raja Rani'.
Ø In 2015, he won two awards belonging to the category Best Supporting Actor for the film 'Baahubali: The Beginning'. These are Vikatan Award and IIFA Utsavam Award.
